Down with love by Kate Meader

I absolutely loved this romantic comedy about a wedding planner and a divorce lawyer butting heads and finding love. There is just something about an opposites attract kind of romance that I think might make it my favorite kind of romance. Usually it involves some fun banter and them realising that they actually have something in common that makes them the perfect pair. This definitely had all of that, and the banter had me laughing quite a bit and I actually highlighted quite a bit of quotes. I really loved the way this was written, I loved the humour and I loved the authors view on love and relationships.

Most couples come together in a rush of passion, but not all of them learn the art of conflict resolution. We want to think we can retain the giddy joy of our wedding day and stretch it to cover all the cracks. But really, it’s when a couple learns how to fight properly—how to argue effectively and work through problems productively—well, that’s the recipe for everlasting love.”

I also loved the characters, both the main characters Charlie and Max, but also all of the secondary characters. I will definitely need to check out the other books in this series. I loved how Max seemed like a cynic, but was truly a romantic a heart with a love for old movies (I’m a moviebuff myself and loved how he tried to use a line from a Hitchcock movie when he first met Charlie – so cute!).

I think I might have discovered a new favourite romantic comedy writer and will have to check out more books from Kate Meader in the future!

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I really liked the world and all of the little magical touches the author described and incorporated into the story. I also really liked the characters, but wanted to know even more about them! I tought it was interesting to follow a character who had a strong moral compass and I really liked how smart and capable Scarlett was. I was really curious about Scarletts sister Donatella and I hoped to see more of her (which was good because the second book is told from her perspective).

I loved the mystery aspects of the story; who is Legend? Where is Donatella? Who can Scarlet trust? The twists and turns really had me guessing and it was quite a ride!

There was a point where it got a bit overly dramatic (for my tastes), but other than that I REALLY enjoyed this.

A fun and magical ride and I’m giving it 4,5 stars.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

This is the first book I’ve read by Christina Lauren, and I figured a hate-to-love romantic comedy mostly set in Hawaii was sure to be a win.

This is a cute and funny story about Olive who is the unlucky sister to her lucky twin sister. Olives sister is getting married, but when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning, except for Olive and the best man Ethan they are the only people who can go on the all expenses paid honeymoon trip. Awkward since they don’t really like each other, but they’re willing to put up with each other for a free vacation, however once there they are forced by circumstances to pretend to be newlyweds.

I’m a big fan of the hate-to-love trope and I’ve also read plenty of fake relationship romances, and even though I liked this book, I didn’t love it. It’s cute, and a bit funny (but never laugh out loud funny), but I usually want a bit more steaminess from my adult romance (this is fade to black). I also usually prefer a different type of heroine, I feel like the popular heroine these days is the quirky woman with bad luck and who can’t stop talking (my preferred heroine is a bit more put together who knows what she wants out of life). The hero was some weird combination of cocky, but nerdy and with a great body (without having to exercise – because that is never mentioned). I should probably also mention that the hate-to love was very light. I think this is probably a book that will appeal to the readers that loved The Hating Game as it has a lot in common with that book (among other things that I didn’t love that one either).

This was a cute read, but not a new favourite and I give it 3 stars.

Riding Hard by Lauren Landish

This is the second book in the series Bennett Boys Ranch, but you don’t have to read the first one to read this one (which I haven’t). In this cowboy romance we follow the oldest Bennett brother, Mark, who has the responsibility for the family ranch on his shoulders. In town he’s known for being quiet and reserved, but the new woman in town, event planner Katelyn, might be just the right woman to crack his gruff exterior.

I absolutely loved this book, it might have had something to do with me not having read a good romance for a while (when I read this book), but it was exactly what I needed. If you don’t like possessive men (with a kinky side) you might not like Mark. But I felt that it was done really well and that Mark also was a gentleman and very supportive. Katelyn was the perfect woman for him as she didn’t accept any misunderstandings or miscommunication and they made a great couple. Also felt great to read a romance that didn’t have any unnecessary drama thrown in just to make the story more interesting.

I don’t really like giving romancenovels ratings, but I really liked this one! Recommend!

The Familiars by Stacey Halls

The purchase of this book was a case of bookstagram made me buy it, I just saw this beautiful cover in a post and had to have it! That it’s a historical novel with some witchy aspects just made me want it more. The story is set in 17th century England, and somewhat based on real events as the story is set against the real Pendle Hill Witch Trials. The main character is Fleetwood Shuttleworth, the seventeen year old wife of a nobleman. She has lost several children before their birth and is pregnant again. This time she fears the pregnancy will kill her so she hires a midwife called Alice Grey who promises that she can help deliver a healthy baby. But before her pregnancy can come to term Alice is accused of witchcraft and Fleetwood has to try to prove Alice’s innocence.

I loved this story, I loved how we got to follow Fleetwood as she grew from an afraid and naive young girl to a woman who stood up for the things she believed in and risked everything in her pursuit of justice. This is in parts a mystery in which Fleetwood tries to find out if the people accused are in fact witches, but it’s also a story about a growing friendship and of a woman who starts to discover that the world isn’t as simple as she’s always believed it to be. I loved how all of the characters were both good and bad, and that some things were allowed to remain a mystery.

I just loved this story and the characters portrayed, there where perhaps some things that could have been given more space, but I think that overall it was a really lovely book!

Circe by Madeline Miller

I’ve been really interested in historical fiction lately, and in particular stories with a connection to ancient Greece or greek mythology. After reading (and loving) The Silence of the girls by Pat Barker which is a retelling of the Illiad from the perspective of Briseis I was really excited to read Circe. To be clear I have not read any of the classical works this story is based on.

I had VERY high expectations on this book, perhaps a bit too high. It’s not really the type of book I usually read, as it chronicles Circes life from the time she’s born. And I’m honestly a bit lost on how I felt about it… It’s very good, don’t get me wrong, but I was sort of expecting a bit…more.. It’s a very good character portrait of a woman who perhaps is a bit misunderstood and who makes mistakes, who grows and evolves as a character. But at the end I felt like the story never really ‘lifted’ and I have to admit that I didn’t really like the ending. And by that I don’t mean the ambiguousness of it, I’m referring to the love story.

It is however a really good book, and if you like character driven books (rather than plot-driven like me..) you’ll probably fall head over heels in love with it.

This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

This is the second book in the Starbound series. I read the first book in 2017 and I loved it, but I just felt completely emotionally drained by it and I needed a break. Luckily this book is centered around two new main characters (but Lilac and Tarver from the first book play a part in this book as well). In this book we follow Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac, they both live on the planet Avon, but they are on different sides of a rebellion that has been going on for years. They meet when Flynn takes Jubilee prisoner, and when Flynn has to make a difficult choice their lives change forever.

I just love how high the stakes are in these books and how you don’t really know where the story is taking you. I loved both main characters from the first page and I could not help rooting for them. I loved how they instantly recognized the chemistry between them, but because who they where they felt that they had to fight their feelings. The relationship in this book was so well developed and felt very real, I just loved it! The story was very engaging and the mystery aspect of the weird things going on on the planet had me intrigued and hooked til’ the end. I also feel that the writers do action very well and in a way that you actually fear for the characters.

This story was just so well crafted, I have to give it 5 stars!

Sky without Stars by Jessica Brody & Joanne Rendell

When I first heard about this book and that it was a retelling of Les Misérables, but set in space, I was intrigued. To be honest though, I’m not really that familiar with the story having only watched the film version from 2012. This book is told from the perspective of three different characters, Chatine a street-savvy thief, Marcellus the officer and Alouette who is living in an underground refuge. They will all have a role to play in an upcoming revolution.

I really wanted to love this book, but first off I only really liked one of the characters, Chatine who I thought was an interesting character with a lot of motivation behind her actions. She was a bit of a morally grey character who you could not help but root for. I wanted to like the other two but Marcellus annoyed me quite a bit with his weird fascination (and possible insta-love) with Alouette. He basically liked her because she was beautiful and “mysterious” *sigh*. Alouette was just an annoying character with no substance and a boring story arc. Usually I can enjoy a book even if I’m not completely sold on the characters, but the story just didn’t do it for me and by the end i just didn’t care anymore. I probably won’t continue with this series when the next book comes out. But we’ll see.

But just because I didn’t love this doesn’t mean you won’t. Read it if you’re intrigued by the synopsis and like light sci fi and stories about a budding revolution.

The Wicked King by Holly Black

If you’ve read my review of The Cruel Prince you know that I didn’t really like Jude. I feel like she is growing a lot as a character and that her motivations are better described in this book. Jude isn’t necessarily a likable character, she makes mistakes and does some horrible things, but I did like her more in this book. We also get to know Cardan a bit more and I really enjoy reading about their antagonistic relationship. In this book we get thrown right into the story and into all of the plotting and intrigues of life at court. I really enjoy reading about court drama and backstabbing, and if you do too you’ll probably enjoy these books. We get a few twists and turns and it’s not always obvious which direction the story will take.

It’s still not a 5 star read for me, but it’s a strong 4 stars!

Saga vol. 4 by Brian K. Vaughan (Writer), Fiona Staples (Artist)

I really enjoy reading the different volumes for this graphic novel-series, there’s always plenty of humour, graphic violence and nudity, and they are also kinda heartbreaking. I’m not really a person that reads a lot of graphic novels, but these are something special. Oh, and I forgot to mention that the art is a great mixture of cute, colorful and scary.

I think I’ve given all of the volumes so far a 5 star rating, and that’s what I’ll give this volume to.
